Why I left
I left due to a combination of limited compensation and operational challenges that made long-term sustainability difficult. During my time there, the organization was going through leadership transitions, and there appeared to be a learning curve at the senior level around financial management and operational systems. This sometimes resulted in unclear direction and inconsistent processes, which made it harder to execute work effectively, especially in a junior capacity. While the organization is deeply mission-driven and values diversity in leadership, there were moments where structure and long-term planning felt underdeveloped. The environment was generally warm, grassroots, and community-oriented, with a more relaxed and informal atmosphere than traditional corporate settings. Ultimately, I chose to leave in search of a role with clearer systems, stronger organizational infrastructure, and more sustainable compensation.
Advice for the next person
Compensation may not be sufficient to support a full cost-of-living lifestyle in NYC, so it’s important to plan accordingly and consider additional income streams if needed. This environment tends to work best for individuals who are comfortable with ambiguity and can operate independently without highly defined systems or processes. The work is generally straightforward, but progress often depends on self-direction and initiative rather than structured guidance. It may be better suited for those looking to apply existing experience in a mission-driven setting, rather than those seeking foundational training or early-career development. Individuals transitioning from more established careers, or those prioritizing purpose over financial growth, may find the experience more aligned. Overall, success here depends on balancing commitment to the mission with realistic expectations around structure, compensation, and long-term growth.
